Ait Mgoun Mountain is a part of the High Atlas range, and rises in the heart of the high Atlas Mountains chain. East of Marrakech and the Toubkal National Park, the Ait Mgoun rises up to 4068 m in altitude. Hikes in the Region around Ait Mgoun:
Starting at Agouti, this excursion starts with six hours of walking toward Jebel Tarkeddid, passing through the little parched villages of Rouguelt and 'Ifri N'Ait Kherfella. Once you’ve arrived at 2600m in altitude, you’ll be able to spend the night in a bivouac near the sheep pastures. The next day you’ll tackle the climb to the Tarkeddid mountain pass (3400m). From up here, admire the beautiful panoramic view over the Igoudamen mountain chain. You’ll then climb back down towards the Tarkeddid plateau: after 5h30min of walking, you can rest before finally climbing M’Goun.
Climbing M'Goun :
After 5 hours of climbing up foothills, you’ll get to the peak, the region’s culminating point. From here, you’ll have an extended view over the High Atlas and the Saharan Plains. Next, descend in the direction of the high valleys of Oulilimt. After eight to nine hours of walking, you’ll reach the Oulilimt springs, a magnificent site where you can stay for the night under a bivouac at 2550 metres in altitude. In the morning head towards Tagreft, in the high M’Goun Valley. After following the rapids for a while, you’ll reach Tarzout, at the foot of the walls of the Jebel Wawgoulzat: this place is a perfect spot to begin an exploration of the M’Goun Gorges. In the heart of the low valley, you will discover Aguerzak and Boutaghar, and the doorstep of the Moroccan Sahara. The landscape changes as you walk and penetrate this world of orchards, palm groves and kasbahs...
Around Ait M'Goun :
Ait M’Goun’s low valley is an interesting departure point for discovering the great Amazigh land after few hours, you penetrate into the valley of roses. Across deep canyons at the feet of Amazigh kasbahs, the walk is absolutely unforgettable. In the beginning of May, all the colours and perfumes of the blossoming roses fill the valley. From here you can rejoin the road of a thousand kasbahs, the Dades Gorges the road to Timbuktu Mali.
